Change Leaders

This morning I have the absolute privilege of speaking to a group of real estate, mortgage and title professionals and we’re really focusing on the subject of change. There is a lot of change right now in the real estate industry dictated by recent lawsuits, a Department of Justice investigation, and it goes beyond that into how we are interacting with AI and dealing with interest rate lock (people who want to move but don’t because their existing mortgage has a low interest rate). When speaking to an agent recently who was considering getting out of the business because of all these changes, it got me thinking about real estate practitioners in general.

We are change agents for buyers and sellers of real estate. We help people navigate some of the biggest changes in their lives. Therefore, we ought to get better at embracing it in our own lives and even in our industry. This is not easy because change can bring up some fears and that’s what we’re tackling this morning. It’s not so much a fear of change thing, it’s a fear of change when we aren’t in control thing. We may embrace change where we have influence, but if something is imposed upon us – look out!

What is happening right now in real estate is not business as usual, and it’s also not existential. At least not for the masses. It may be existential on an individual basis. Some will retire, some will choose another path, and some will use this all as an excuse because they weren’t willing to do the right work, the hard work it takes to build a real estate business and adapt to new realities.

Those who make it through, who adapt, who do the right work with consistency and focus, and work with a sense of urgency will FLOURISH. Some will have the best years of their entire CAREER! Why not you? It’s still a choice, always has been, always will be.

So let us REFRAME what is going on, because it’s easy to get out of alignment sometimes and buy in to this ridiculous world of click-bait messaging and hyperbole to make an advertising dime. We are pummeled with dramatic messaging from all over, and need to get to filter that out and find the good sources of information.

So, what is one major difference in the successful v the unsuccessful? Well, this month our focus is on execution. Successful people bridge the gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it. In my sales career, recruiting and developing hundreds of agents and leaders, and coaching high performers in different industries, I believe there to be a small handful of things that make all the difference. You’ve heard me sate these before, it’s the platform for my coaching business:

  • Get clear on your MVP (Mission, Vision, and Principles)
  • Do the mindset and self-worth work
  • Plan for real
  • Develop proper work ethic and good habits and ditch the bad ones
  • Prepare for resilience
  • Celebrate the journey

This stuff is challenging. Change is hard. Once we understand why, we can decide to take our focus off of the obstacles and learn to see the opportunity on the other side of them. Those who clear the hurdles, well, they are the ones that will reap tremendous rewards.
